Abuse of alcohol is costs society dearly

Sunday December 9, 2007

Underage drinking costs Illinois $2.9 billion a year but earns the alcohol industry nearly $23 billion a year. Research shows that young people who start drinking before the age of 15 are five times more likely to have alcohol-related problems later in life.

Each year, underage drinking leads to almost 3,200 deaths and 2.6 million other harmful events including injuries, assaults and violence. How can we continue to justify alcohol industry profits at the expense of our young people? Join the Champaign-Urbana Campus/Community Coalition and let your voice be heard.
