Budget cuts in Illinois to human services are devastating and inhumane. These cuts will affect people with disabilities, seniors and children. Some persons with disabilities and seniors will be forced into institutions, which on average cost the state up to three times as much. Workers also who care for persons with disabilities, seniors and children will get laid off and will seek unemployment. So, therefore it will cost more in years to come.
A dear friend of mine has lived in his own apartment since January 2007, after residing in a group home for a number of years. He has daily help from personal assistants and his grandparents, who became his legal guardians at the age of 6. He enjoys his independent life and making his own choices such as what to eat or where to go; he also enjoys listening to music, surfing the Internet and eating out with friends. If these budget cuts take place he will lose his funding and might be forced to move to a group home or a nursing home.
