Friday July 3, 2009

Our slow economy can't pick up speed if it's hobbled by paralyzing government policies.

Various experts, some political and some not, keep predicting that economic recovery is just around the corner.

Heeding unfounded economic advise from the editorial brain trust at the News-Gazoo makes about as much sense as embracing any opinion it might spew on theoretical physics.

Please John Foreman do tell. Do you favor string theory or general relativity?

Reagan didn't do anything. It was Volcker. Do you guys really think Reagan knew anything about economics? It's time to set aside the myth that Reagan was some kind of hero. He was a man on modest intellect who had a good personality and was able to deliver his lines (usually).

Maybe you should read: "Tear Down This Myth: How the Reagan Legacy Has Distorted Our Politics and Haunts Our Future" by Will Bunch.

The economic engine of Champaign-Urbana is the U of I. There will be no surer way to ruin the local economy than to slash the state (and university budget). The citizens and businesses of Illinois must do the fiscally responsible thing and help the government through this temporary shortfall by paying a little more in income taxes. Otherwise our unemployment numbers will start to look like surrounding communities who have 10% rates pretty quickly.

It really takes a lack of talent to keep churning out these pointless lectures about the economy.

The N-G must have a Madlibs board it uses when it attempts to write about economics. Today, it replaced "tax-and-spend" with "cap-and-trade." "Supply-side economics" was replaced with "trying to break the back of inflation." Whatever that means.

The inconsistency is particularly noticeable with the Reagan example. So government spending was good in 1983, even though we didn't see results right away, but it's bad in 2009 BECAUSE we haven't seen results right away?

Riiiiiiiiiight. OK. Nice try, though.

The news gazette editorial departments choice of titles is misleading for all those that just read the titles. As for the comments from BillD, and Wenalway, FYI, government does not create income. "Supply side" is the same as saying "Privat sector" and that IS where income is generated. Government takes money out of the economy. Sheesh, some of you smart people are really dumb!
