Mutt Strut raises $22,000

CHAMPAIGN — A major fundraiser for the Champaign County Humane Society set a record Saturday, despite weather that threatened to call it off.

The Mutt Strut, held at Hessel Park in Champaign, raised $22,000 for the humane society. That's an increase of more than 20 percent over last year, according to a release from Megan Wolf of the society.

The money is used to help run the society's shelter in Urbana, including providing medical care for animals there.

The event included participants signing up to walk their dogs, and dogs from the shelter as well. There were stops along the way for "passport" stamps for dogs to do tricks.

"Record turn-out and we surpassed our fundraising goal," said Mary "Tief" Tiefenbrunn, executive director of the humane society. She said sponsors, vendors and participants were all generous, "and we're very grateful for their participation and support."

"All the dogs were well-behaved, too!"

One of the dogs that attended "blogged" about it here: http://bit.ly/mutt2011

Its awesome to be a part of such a great event with the help and support of many more animal lovers. I'd read where the Bin Laden Navy Seals included a military dog in their crew to execute the mission. If there were only more ways for people to experience the rewards of a relationship with having their own very best of friends... How many friends would help you hunt down your worst enemy lol Gotta love em. Dogs Rule - All animals are totally cool... Thx everyone for helping spread the good words.
