Sadorus considering improving ball fields

SADORUS — Village officials are considering improving the baseball fields at Sadorus Community Park to make them playable again.

Ben Rink of Tolono, a golf course superintendent with a construction background, gave the village board three options for improvements, ranging in price from $19,000 to $31,000.

"What's out there now is a combination of dirt, rocks and debris," Rink said. "It's not a safe environment."

Although some village officials had wanted to have a grass infield, Rink said that would increase maintenance costs and would only allow a basepath for one level of play rather than including everything from T-ball to adult softball.

Trustee Jim Thompson balked at the cost, saying there was no guarantee the fields would be used.

Sadorus youths travel to Tolono to play in that village's park district programs. Tolono Park District has approached the Sadorus board in the past about using its ball diamonds.

Last month, the board received a final payment of $45,687 from the Don Messman trust, which was designated to be used to maintain a veterans' memorial at the minipark next to the village hall and to improve the baseball park.
