World War II memoirs, correspondence and other documents

UPDATED Nov. 18, 2011

Here is where we will post documents that include memoirs, letters and other items from those in World War II.

Added Nov. 18: A list of those from Champaign County who were killed in World War II. And here is a list of those from Vermilion County who were killed in the war.

A Mansfield native who later lived in Champaign and who served in the Merchant Marine chose an unusual way to tell his grandson about his travels.

These are detailed memories of William W. Redman of Bement, who piloted a B-17 bomber in Europe. He flew 50 missions and received the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Air Medal with nine Oak Leaf Clusters.

These have been submitted by family members. If you have documents you would like to have included, please send an email to Mike Howie.

Here is a gallery of photos from World War II. You can add photos to the gallery. We have to approve the pictures, but we try to do that as soon as possible.
