82 in area due federal income tax refunds
CHAMPAIGN — Eighty-two residents of East Central Illinois are due federal income tax refunds that couldn't be delivered as a result of mailing address errors, the Internal Revenue Service says.
They include 47 residents of Champaign County, eight residents of Vermilion County and 27 residents of surrounding areas.
Taxpayers who think their refund checks may have been returned to the IRS can check the agency's website — http://www.irs.gov — and use the "Where's My Refund?" tool there. It will provide the status of their refund, and in some cases, give instructions on how to resolve delivery problems.
They can also access a telephone version of "Where's My Refund?" by calling 1-800-829-1954.
Nationally, 99,123 taxpayers are due refunds that couldn't be delivered as a result of mailing address problems. The average amount of an undelivered refund check is $1,547 this year.
Taxpayers can avoid the problem of not getting a check by choosing direct deposit when they file paper or electronic returns. They can have the refund deposited into their bank account, split the refund between two or three accounts or even buy a savings bond.
The IRS does not notify taxpayers by email to alert them of pending refunds and does not ask for personal or financial information through email.
Anyone receiving such an email should not release any personal information, reply to the email, open any attachments or click on any links, the IRS says.
