A numerical look at Oakwood:
$1 – Price Henry Oakwood, Lemuel Collett and Christian Peipinbrook paid for parcels around the Indianapolis, Bloomington and Western Railroad. These parcels became the village of Oakwood.
2 – Number of Main streets in town.
5 – Number of volunteer policemen appointed in 1952 to patrol Oakwood for teenagers who were vandalizing property and driving recklessly. The appointees brought the number of policemen to six.
5 – Number of National Commode Race Championships the Jaycees hosted in Oakwood in the 1980s.
15 – Smallpox cases reported during an outbreak in 1872.
25 cents – Fare for a round-trip Interurban ride to and from Danville.
32 cents – Amount corn prices dropped – from 50 to 18 – when the railroad came through town.
75 cents – Cost of a one-year subscription to Oakwood's first newspaper, which was started in 1895.
100 – Number of gallons of saltwater boiled down for a bushel of salt at early salt mines near town.
506 – Number of residents after the 1920 census.
1,502 – Number of residents after the 2000 census.
1,700 – Gallons of wine Sleepy Creek Vineyard near Oakwood expects to bottle after this year's harvest.
1903 – The year residents got electrictity when the Interurban electric train came through town.
1917 – The year Oakwood Township High School first published its school newspaper, The Acorn.
$100,000 – Cost of damage to Oakwood High when lightning caused an explosion in 1955. The blast blew out windows and cracked the school's walls.
