GOP now in control of both Champaign township offices

CHAMPAIGN – Republicans gained control of both offices in City of Champaign Township on Tuesday, as longtime assessor Brian Christie was re-elected over 23-year-old Democrat Wayne Williams, 3,305 to 2,785, and Pam Borowski upended D'Anne Winston, 3,219 to 2,634.

Borowski's victory means that Republicans have regained the supervisor's office after years under Democrats Linda Cross and Linda Abernathy. The latter chose not to run for a second term.

Borowski, a real estate agent, credited her win to her stand against a property-tax increase to help fund expanded general assistance to the poor in Champaign. She said she would search out grants and other sources of revenue before supporting a tax increase for "as long as I possibly can."

Winston had said that she would support an effort to put an advisory referendum on the 2010 ballot, calling for a property-tax increase.

Borowski also pledged not to take pay increases for the office that have already been approved. The office now pays $58,994, and Borowski said Tuesday night that she would stand by her promise to not take an approved pay increase to $60,174. She has, however, stated that she hopes to continue to do real estate work on a part-time basis.

She said she would work to bring change to the office.

"People are ready for some accountability," she said. "They're ready for someone who will take some responsibility for the general assistance program and manage it the way it's meant to be managed.

"People are tired of paying taxes after taxes after taxes. And this is one of those programs that, if we can get it back under control and keep it within its budget, going to the taxpayers for more money is an item of last resort."

Christie won a sixth term to the position that pays $60,174 a year. It was the first time since his initial campaign in 1989 that he had been challenged.
