No Democrats file for Champaign's countywide races

URBANA – Champaign County Democrats don't have candidates for any of four countywide seats up for election next year, but they have three candidates for two seats in one county board district and four candidates for two spots in another.

At the close of the candidate filing period on Monday, only Republican incumbents had filed for county clerk (Mark Shelden), sheriff (Dan Walsh), county treasurer (Dan Welch) and regional superintendent of schools (Jane Quinlan). But Democratic Party officials can fill the positions on the Nov. 2, 2010, ballot by slating candidates, so long as they do it by April 2.

Meanwhile, Democrats have four candidates for two seats in District 6 (northwest Champaign) and three candidates for two seats in District 9 (southeast Urbana).

In Springfield on Monday, U.S. Rep. Tim Johnson, R-Urbana, filed for a sixth term in Congress, representing the 15th District. He is the only Republican candidate. Dr. David Gill of Bloomington is the only Democrat to file in the sprawling Eastern Illinois district.

Also Monday, state Sen. Dan Rutherford, R-Chenoa, filed for state treasurer. Rutherford, whose Senate district includes parts of Champaign, Ford, Iroquois and McLean counties, is the only Republican candidate for treasurer. Three Democrats – Justin Oberman and Mark Doyle of Chicago plus Robin Kelly of Matteson – filed for the position, as did Green Party candidate Scott Summers of Harvard.

Although Danville Republican Al Reynolds said last month that he intended to run for the 52nd District state Senate seat, no Republican filed to oppose state Sen. Mike Frerichs, D-Champaign. Reynolds did not return phone calls Monday night.

And no Democrat filed to oppose Sen. Dale Righter, R-Charleston, in the 55th District.

In the 105th House District, incumbent Rep. Shane Cultra, R-Onarga, will have a general election opponent for the first time: Green Party candidate Vince LaMie of Milford.

In the 103rd District, which includes most of Champaign-Urbana, state Rep. Naomi Jakobsson, D-Urbana, filed to run for another term. Republican Norman Davis of Champaign has filed to oppose her.

In the 104th District, which includes most of Vermilion County and the eastern part of Champaign County, Chad Hays of Catlin will run for the Republican nomination and Michael Puhr of Danville is seeking the Democratic nomination.

In the 110th District, incumbent Rep. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, is the only Republican candidate. Dennis Malak of Tuscola is the only Democratic contender.

Back in Champaign County, the following Democrats filed to run for the county board:

District 1 – Eric Thorsland of rural Mahomet.

Districts 2 through 4 – no candidates.

District 5 – incumbent Lorraine Cowart, for one open seat.

District 6 – incumbent Michael Richards and challengers Pattsi Petrie, Debby Auble and Joshua Hartke, all of Champaign, for two seats.

District 7 – incumbent Alan Kurtz of Champaign for one seat.

District 8 – incumbents Ralph Langenheim and Tom Betz for two seats.

District 9 – newcomers Scott Bennett, James Quisenberry and Christoper Alix for two open seats.

The following Republican candidates have filed to run for the Champaign County Board:

District 1 – incumbent Chris Doenitz of rural Mahomet, and challengers Stephanie Holderfield and Gary Maxwell of Mahomet, for one seat.

District 2 – incumbent Stan James and newcomer Diane Michaels, both of rural Mahomet, for two seats.

District 3 – incumbents Brad Jones of Champaign and Jonathan Schroeder of rural Sadorus, for two seats.

District 4 – incumbents Greg Knott of rural St. Joseph and Steve Moser of rural Urbana, for two seats.

District 5 – no candidate for one open seat.

District 6 – newcomer Andrew R. Timms of Champaign for one of two seats.

District 7 – newcomer Sher Hampel of Champaign for one seat.

District 8 – no candidates for two seats.

District 9 – Robert W. Brunner of rural Urbana for one seat.
