Illinois House committee supports infant protection bill

SPRINGFIELD – A bill that would expand Illinois' Abandoned Newborn Infant Protection Act to include full-time campus police stations and Illinois State Police district headquarters was approved unanimously Wednesday by an Illinois House committee.

The legislation (HB 106) is sponsored by state Rep. Naomi Jakobsson, D-Urbana. It was approved 10-0 in the House Human Services Committee.

State law already permits adults to drop off a newborn baby at a municipal police station, sheriff's office, fire station or hospital without fear of prosecution.

Jakobsson said the legislation was not prompted by a particular incident at a college campus.

"When you think about universities, that's certainly a place where there might be some young women who have found themselves in a situation where they're not going to be able to raise a child they've had," she said. "This just makes it another place that the child can safely be taken care of. We don't want situations where a woman has a child and abandons it."

Her legislation applies only to campus police stations that are open 24 hours a day and when employees are present, Jakobsson said.

"We don't want a child put on a doorstep and just left," she said.
