Olympian Drive project takes center stage
URBANA -- The city council this week could vote on a resolution that, if approved, would outline funding for the ongoing engineering design of Olympian Drive into Urbana and authorize officials to proceed with land acquisition for what has been a controversial project.
The city council will meet on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Urbana City Building, 400 S. Vine St.
Officials estimate that the design and land acquisition for a segment of Olympian Drive will cost about $16.5 million. All of that money is expected to come from state and federal sources rather than local tax dollars.
Council members are also scheduled to vote on an agreement that would provide dollars for design and land acquisition of a 1-mile stretch of North Lincoln Avenue, which would intersect Olympian Drive after it crosses over the Champaign-Urbana border.
The North Lincoln Avenue design and land purchases is estimated to cost $3.6 million. Of that, $1.4 million is expected to come from a federal transportation program and the remaining $2.2 million would be split between the city of Urbana and Champaign County.
The Champaign County Board must also approve of the two agreements.
Where and how the two segments of road should be built have been the source of debate for years, with the bulk of it coming in recent months as government officials negotiated with north Urbana landowners who did not want to give up their property.
"I think the public engagement process since last summer totally has influenced the scope of the Olympian Drive project," said Urbana Public Works Director Bill Gray.
The new plan reflects a compromise with landowners the "S" shape of North Lincoln Avenue between Saline Court and where it will intersect Olympian Drive was devised to minimize the effect on adjacent landowners. And the continuation of Olympian Drive from Lincoln Avenue to Cunningham Avenue a segment that city and county officials saw as full speed ahead until landowners to the east objected last spring has been put on hold for now.
"I would say in the future," Gray said of the eventual construction of that Olympian Drive continuation. "I cannot say when that would be."
