Top area road projects include I-57 work, Danville subway
SPRINGFIELD -- The biggest state highway project scheduled in the area for the upcoming fiscal year is the resurfacing of a 5-mile stretch of southbound Interstate 57 between Olympian Drive and Thomasboro.
That $10.5 million project is among $357 million in highway construction projects proposed for fiscal years 2012-2017 in Illinois Department of Transportation District 5, which includes Champaign, Vermilion, McLean, Piatt, DeWitt, Douglas and Edgar counties.
This year's work on Interstate 57 calls for "rubblization" and an overlay on the highway between Olympian Drive in Champaign and a point two miles south of Thomasboro. In rubblization, the existing concrete surface is broken up and used to provide a stable base for an asphalt overlay.
The work is to be paid for with a combination of federal and state money.
Other projects scheduled for the upcoming year include:
- $7 million for the Fairchild Avenue subway replacement under the Norfolk Southern and CSX Railroad tracks in Danville.
- Repairs to the I-57 bridge under Kirby Avenue in Champaign, at an approximate cost of $400,000.
- Engineering on improvements to the Interstate 57-Interstate 74 interchange west of Champaign. Joseph Crowe, the Region 3 director for IDOT, said officials are taking "a very preliminary look" at what can be done to improve safety at the interchange. "We have no idea when there would be any construction there," he said.
- $770,000 for repairs to a bridge on U.S. 36 three miles west of the Indiana state line in Edgar County.
- About $500,000 for land acquisition and utility adjustments along U.S. 150 between Urbana and St. Joseph.
- $2.1 million for resurfacing, shoulder work and guardrail improvements to six miles of Illinois 47 between the Ford County line and U.S. 136 in Champaign County.
- About $1.2 million for engineering and replacement of a bridge on County Highway 55 two miles north of Rantoul.
Longer range projects (for some time between 2013 and 2017) in District 5 include:
- About $6 million included for engineering work on a new Interstate 74 interchange east of Urbana. It hasn't been decided where the interchange would be, said Crowe, the IDOT regional director.
- Nearly $32 million for resurfacing, bridge raising and bridge replacement on Interstate 74 between University Avenue in Urbana and U.S. 150 in Danville.
- $1.25 million for a pedestrian overpass on Curtis Road over Interstate 57 in Champaign. The project, according to IDOT, is dependent upon the city of Champaign or a local developer building a bike path to the pedestrian bridge, Crowe said. The pedestrian bridge probably will be built a few hundred yards north of Curtis Road, said Champaign City Engineer Roland White.
- $3.1 million for a new bridge over Interstate 57 at Windsor Road in Champaign. State officials are working with the city of Champaign, Crowe said, to determine how wide the replacement bridge will be. A major sticking point, White added, is how much of the bridge's cost will be covered by the state.
- $8.5 million for resurfacing and safety improvements on Interstate 74 between Mahomet and just west of Champaign.
- More than $11 million to resurface U.S. 45 from the Ford County line south to 1.5 miles south of Thomasboro.
- About $4 million to resurface U.S. 45 from south of Pesotum through Douglas County to the Coles County line.
- Nearly $7.5 million to resurface about three miles of U.S. 36 through Danville from National Street to the Indiana state line.
- About $6 million to resurface six miles of U.S. 150 from Urbana to Elm Street in St. Joseph.
- About $2.6 million to resurface 9.74 miles of U.S. 150 from Mahomet to Mattis Avenue in Champaign.
- About $2.5 million to resurface 8 miles of Illinois 1 from the Iroquois County line to near Rossville.
- More than $8 million for land acquisition, utility adjustments, resurfacing and shoulder repairs for 8.5 miles of Illinois 47 from U.S. 136 to Interstate 74 in Champaign County.
- About $2.5 million for replacement of the Illinois 119 bridge over the North Fork of the Vermilion River two miles east of Illinois 1.
- $2.5 million for preliminary engineering and new construction on Illinois 130 from U.S. 150 to Windsor Road in east Urbana.
- $2 million for resurfacing 1.7 miles of Mattis Avenue from Bloomington Road to Springfield Avenue in west Champaign.
The state highway improvement program also continues to include $7 million for new construction of 1.14 miles of Olympian Drive from Apollo Drive to Lincoln Avenue, north of Urbana.
Interesting ideas. The 57-74 interchange is dangerous. Windsor needs a new bridge over 57 especially with the apartments and YMCA going up on the west side of 57.... ideally a bridge with a pedestrian path so people don't have to balance on the curb between the edge of the road and the edge of the bridge.
These are predominantly IDOT (state) projects, with cooperation and co-funding from the cities involved. I hope this allows Champaign, Urbana, and Savoy to use municipal funds to concentrate on rebuilding infrastructure within the cities while IDOT undertakes these large projects.
