Urbana to consider Olympian Drive measures

URBANA -- With the county board having finalized technicalities in one of the agreements, Urbana city council members again will consider two deals that would allow agencies to move toward the construction of segments of Olympian Drive and North Lincoln Avenue.

The committee of the whole will meet on Monday at 7 p.m. in the Urbana City Building, 400 S. Vine St.

On Thursday, the Champaign County Board narrowly adopted a resolution approving an agreement to extend Olympian Drive from its current terminus in Champaign. City council members had been waiting on county officials to finalize certain clauses in that contract.

It is estimated that the design and land acquisition for that segment of Olympian Drive will cost about $16.5 million. All of that money is expected to come from state and federal sources rather than local tax dollars.

A separate but related contract, which would move forward a project to extend Lincoln Avenue north to intersect Olympian Drive when it is built, is also listed on the committee's agenda. The county board is expected to address that agreement next month.

The North Lincoln Avenue design and land purchases are estimated to cost $3.6 million. Of that, $1.4 million is expected to come from a federal transportation program and the remaining $2.2 million would be split between the city of Urbana and Champaign County.

"All of that money is expected to come from state and federal sources rather than local tax dollars."

State and federal funds come from people who live locally.

This will run 60-100% over budget so the two factories on the west side can burn more gas.
