Gibson City Council OKs 230-foot cell tower

GIBSON CITY — Council members approved a variance allowing U.S. Cellular to build a 230-foot tower that will be used to improve the firm's cellular service in Urbana.

Without a variance, Gibson City ordinances limit a structure's height to three stories (45 feet). The city's Zoning Board of Appeals met May 12 and recommended approval of the 230-foot tower on two lots at 310 S. West Street, according to chairman Marty Nuss.

The new site is being leased from Rhodes Tower Acquisition LLC and was described as "an open area near other businesses with few homes close by." The structure's value was listed at $86,000.

In other business, the council approved Mayor Daniel Dickey's appointment of Lisa Helgesen as animal control warden. She will be paid $20 per call for collecting, housing and placing animals when the owner cannot be located.

Council members also approved a revised proposal totaling $2,544.50 to Ropp's Flower Factory of Gibson City for summer flower plantings and placing winter greenery in downtown planters.

About 16 businesses have agreed to water and maintain the plantings, which will save the city $3,850 in labor charges.
