Catlin discusses sidewalk extension to new store
CATLIN — Village board members talked Tuesday about the possibility of extending a sidewalk to the Dollar General Store on the Catlin-Tilton Road.
Board member Clay Woodard said the current sidewalk on the northeast part of Catlin only goes as far as North Street. It is more than a quarter-mile from that point to the new store.
"It is a safety concern," Woodard said. "I see kids riding their bikes on the road to and from the store."
Woodard said construction costs for a new sidewalk might be as high as $70,000, but could be less if the sidewalk was 3 1/2 feet wide instead of 4, and if a footbridge could be installed over a creek that runs on the west side of the Catlin-Tilton Road instead of having to extend the culvert there.
Mayor Jim Robinson said he wanted to talk to Dollar General representatives about sharing the costs of the project.
In other business, Woodard resigned from the board, and said that his job responsibilities with the Illinois State Police had changed, and he was no longer able to give the board the amount of time that he felt he should.
Woodard was seated as a village commissioner on May 1, following a four-year term as mayor. Any residents interested in being considered for the open seat on the board should contact village hall at 427-2136.
