Congressman Tim Johnson of Urbana says he's continuing to push for bipartisanship in Washington.

     The Republican was a guest Wednesday on "A Penny For Your Thoughts" with Jim Turpin on NewsTalk 1400 WDWS-AM.

     He says he's gotten some good feedback from the town hall meeting he held with Democratic Representative Christopher Murphy on October 16th.

     Johnson says events like that are a good way to get the word out about bipartisanship efforts.

    Johnson says his Center Aisle Caucus group in Congress, which promotes civility and bipartisanship, has grown to nearly 50 members.
   
     Meanwhile, Johnson says he's wary of the ability of the bipartisan Super Committee in solving the nation's problems.

     He says he doesn't think that the Super Committee will be able to accomplish anything more than Congress would in trying to solve the nation's debt crisis.

     Johnson says if Congress can't agree with the Super Committee's recommendation, there will be across-the-board cuts, including to the nation's defense efforts.

     Johnson also says he's happy with President Obama's decision to withdraw troops from Iraq, but in his mind it's just the first step.

     He says he wants troops withdrawn from other countries as well, because in his eyes, their purpose there has long since expired.

     Johnson says by the time all troops are withdrawn from the Middle East, the United States will have spent over $3 trillion on military efforts.
  
     He says that spending is ill-advised in a time where the nation is in a debt crisis.
