Candidate filings set up handful of contests for GOP primary in Ford County

PAXTON — Voters in Ford County will have options when choosing the Republican nominees for some seats on the county board and for the county coroner's job in 2012.

Six people filed nominating petitions for four available seats on the county board in District 1 by the close of the filing period late Monday afternoon. Meanwhile, six people also filed for four open board seats in District 2, and two filed for nomination as coroner.

But those will be the only contested races in the March 2012 primary election in Ford County. And no Democrats filed, meaning the outcome of the election will be determined by the Republican primary instead of November's general election.

In District 1, which represents the Paxton area, filing for county board seats were all four incumbents: Tom McQuinn, Jason Johnson and Gene May, all of rural Paxton, and Richard Hewerdine of Paxton. Also filing were former board member Dave Hastings of Paxton and former board Chairman Debbie Smith of rural Paxton.

In District 2, which represents an area encompassing Roberts, Melvin, Piper City and Sibley, filing for county board seats were all four incumbents: Patricia Haskins of rural Sibley, Robert Lindgren of rural Loda, Floyd "Bud" Otto Jr. of rural Roberts and Tim Nuss of rural Roberts. Two newcomers also filed: Cindy Ihrke of rural Roberts and Ann Ihrke of rural Buckley.

A random drawing Tuesday morning will determine the ballot positions of the first four candidates who filed in both District 1 and District 2. In the lottery will be District 1 candidates Hastings, McQuinn, Johnson and May; and District 2 candidates Ann and Cindy Ihrke, Haskins and Lindgren.

In District 3, which represents the Gibson City area, filing for county board seats were all four incumbents but no one else: Elynor Stagen, Randy Berger and Randy Ferguson, all of Gibson City, and board Chairman Rick Bowen of Elliott.

For coroner, incumbent Doug Wallace of rural Melvin filed, as did newcomer Kip Rutledge of Elliott.

Filing unopposed for other seats were: Judy Hastings of Paxton, for treasurer; Matt Fitton of Paxton, for re-election as state's attorney; and Kim Evans of Paxton, for re-election as circuit clerk.

For the first time in 10 years, the seats of all 12 members of the Ford County Board are up for election at one time. Half of the people elected to the board will serve two-year terms, while the others will serve four-year terms, starting Dec. 1, 2012. The duration of their terms is expected to be determined through a random drawing at the December 2012 reorganizational meeting.

Meanwhile, some residents of the Paxton area will vote in a different district for county board members in 2012, after the board approved a redistricting plan based on results of the 2010 U.S. Census earlier this year. Voters in the Patton 3 precinct will vote in District 1 instead of District 3.
