80 from area haven't collected undelivered tax refunds
About 80 area residents are due tax refunds from the Internal Revenue Service that the U.S. Postal Service has been unable to deliver.
That includes 21 people in Champaign, 15 people in Urbana and seven people in Danville, as well as many in smaller communities in East Central Illinois.
"In Illinois, the average undeliverable refund is $1,023," said IRS spokeswoman Sue Hales. "We'd like to get this money back to taxpayers as quickly as possible. All we need is an updated address, and we can reissue the check."
People can find out if they are due a refund by visiting the IRS Web site, www.irs.gov, and clicking on "Where's My Refund."
The taxpayer will need to enter information from the 2008 tax return, including Social Security number, filing status and refund amount.
Taxpayers will receive the status of their refund check and, in some cases, will get instructions to resolve delivery problems.
People can check the status of their refund by calling 800-829-1954. Those checking on a refund by phone will be given instructions on how to update their address.
