Free dog is worth plenty to sheriff

Jerommie Smith, a seven-year deputy with the Champaign County sheriff's office, has a new partner, Zeus. On his own time and with his own money, Smith trained his own Rottweiler to be a certified detector dog. Smith and his shift commander made the necessary modifications to the squad car to accommodate the dog.

URBANA - He's a public official's dream come true - an employee who does something for nothing and who gets another employee to do the same.
