Flames and smoke erupt from the Stark Excavating Inc. maintenance building at 2000 N. Market St., on Friday afternoon. Several muffled explosions came from the building, which contained acetylene and oxygen tanks, according to fire officials. No injuries were reported as of 3:30 p.m., but fire officials said the situation remained dangerous until the tanks cooled down.
CHAMPAIGN – The cause of a fire that destroyed a Stark Excavating Inc. maintenance building on Market Street on Friday is yet to be determined, according to the Champaign Fire Department.
The fire ravaged the building at 2000 N. Market St., with smoke rising more than 100 feet above the building and flames still blazing nearly an hour after a 911 call was made at 2:22 p.m.
