Keeping cool an age-old task

Children in Debra Curtis' 3-4 class at the Little Wings Day Care Center cool off in one of several pools set up outside the Rantoul preschool on Monday. The kids were splashing, wading and running through a sprinkler in temperatures that reached 94.

Maybe it was just that people didn't have air conditioning back then, and they just plain expected to be hot in the summertime.

But, in the midst of this week's punishing heat wave, Elizabeth Babbs of Urbana says she just doesn't remember feeling quite so hot during her early years of working as a long-distance telephone operator for Illinois Bell.
