Hospital, clinic argue over need for facility

An overflow crowd waits its turn outside the Illinois Health Facilities Planning Board hearing Friday about a proposed Christie Clinic outpatient surgery center. The hearing was at the Douglass Branch Library in Champaign.

CHAMPAIGN – Mary Ellen Hoss of Champaign speaks emotionally about the long history she's had with Provena Covenant Medical Center and how she wouldn't want to go anywhere else for hospital care.

But after her husband encountered a three-week wait for coronary bypass surgery because of scheduling backups at Covenant, she said, she could see there's a need for more operating rooms in Champaign-Urbana.
