Renee DeBord, who leaves today to serve in Iraq, holds her daughter Brooklen, 2, while talking with Bev Wright, who has volunteered to take care of Brooklen while DeBord is gone.

CHAMPAIGN – When Renee DeBord ships out to Iraq today, she'll leave her 2-year-old daughter with a volunteer who promises to keep a loving eye on her.

DeBord's not happy about leaving Brooklen, who's 2, until January 2008, but she's very grateful to Bev Wright – who was just an acquaintance until two months ago – and to her friends at Parkland College who found grants to cover Brooklen's tuition at the college's Child Development Center, so she has continuity in her life while DeBord is gone.
