When Marge Sodemann was asked to serve on the University of Illinois Board of Trustees six years ago, it took her by surprise.
The former secretary of state's employee had worked as Champaign Township supervisor, a Champaign County Board member, an adviser to former Gov. George Ryan, and she volunteered with the Girl Scouts, Junior League and other organizations. She wasn't deeply involved in the UI.
