Injury can't end her journey

University of Illinois student Miriam Young, 22, has been involved in volunteer projects in Ecuador and Guatemala and has studied in India, Scotland, Canada and Senegal. She has continued her travels despite suffering an almost crippling injury in Senegal.

After the boulder pierced and crushed her left leg, Miriam Young, pinned between two rocks, lifted her head and looked to the west.

There it was, beyond the heap of black volcanic rock: the Atlantic Ocean.
