URBANA – Chief Illiniwek's costume and headdress should be returned to the Oglala Sioux and his dance brought to an end, some elders of the tribe say.
The Executive Committee of the Oglala Sioux Tribal Nation submitted a resolution Thursday to University of Illinois President B. Joseph White, Chancellor Richard Herman and the UI Board of Trustees, demanding the return of the Lakota regalia used in the portrayal of the school's mascot. The resolution, approved Wednesday on a 3-0 vote, will be considered by the full tribal council later this month, said spokesman Mel Lone Hill.
