CHICAGO – When U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Michael Leavitt went inquiring about the price of a medical procedure he needed, he recalls, he learned it wasn't all that easy to shop around for health care.
And when he found the price would vary by thousands of dollars, depending on what doctor or hospital he went to, he had to wonder if the cheapest procedure would be just as good as the most expensive one, he said.
