Newman still hopeful despite plant failure, other setbacks

The gate is locked at the former Hydromet plant outside Newman. The town is still trying to recover from its 1999 closure.

The village of Newman has lost more than 170 residents since 1989. It lost its coal mines, its high school and even its newest hope for an economic boost with the closing of a hazardous materials recycling plant.

But it will bounce back, residents say.
