Ultimately, relationships made it happen. Relationships built starting in the 1940s. Relationships that have survived the BCS. Relationships that were reiterated during a week of conversations leading up to Sunday's announcement.
When the Rose Bowl needed to pick a team to replace Ohio State, it turned to one of its two favorite conferences. And it turned to Illinois.
