CHAMPAIGN – A verdict of not guilty by reason of insanity for a man who shot Champaign police officers in a gun battle near West Side Park brings some closure for the department, according to Deputy Chief John Murphy.
Murphy, 44 , who was among those shot as officers traded gunfire with Donnell Clemons, who was homeless at the time of the shooting and living in a car on the north side of the park on June 7. Murphy was wearing a protective vest and was not seriously injured by a bullet that struck him in the chest.
