Winter is time for birds' need for seed

Whoever coined the phrase "eats like a bird" to describe a meager appetite didn't own a bird feeder.
Birds eat a lot – just ask anyone who regularly puts out seed like black-oil sunflower or thistle. And that's especially true in the winter when birds eat everything they can get their beaks on in order to survive the frigid weather.
