Tax issue likely to be on ballot

CHAMPAIGN – A recognition that economic times are tight led City of Champaign Township Supervisor Linda Abernathy to propose a smaller tax rate increase be placed on the Nov. 4 ballot than was the case two years ago – when a proposed 5-cent tax rate increase was soundly rejected by voters.

The City of Champaign town board – whose members also make up the Champaign City Council – voted unanimously Tuesday night, in a straw poll, to support putting a tax question on the November ballot to increase the district's tax rate by 2 cents per $100 of assessed valuation. A formal board vote to put the question on the ballot will come next month.
