Champaign police Officer Matt Iverson, who was hit and injured during a traffic stop three years ago, is still working his way back to full shifts at the department, while the man convicted of hitting him is out of prison and off parole. Rep. Chapin Rose, R-Mahomet, has proposed legislation to allow judges to hand down stiffer sentences in such cases.
Matt Iverson was working patrol duty as a Champaign police officer one night nearly three years ago and stopped a van for a stoplight violation.
As Iverson approached the van in the 800 block of North Market Street, the driver, Carlton Johns, made a U-turn and ran him over.
