Retired Danville firefighters Thomas Buford, left, and Morris Hunter visit the historic Walnut Street fire station 2 Friday in Danville. Both men used to work at the station.

DANVILLE – Morris Hunter and Thomas Buford both began as "plug men" at the old fire station on Walnut Street, when there were separate stations for black and white firefighters.

The two collectively spent more than 50 years at the historic fire house, which was designated as the city's all-black station in the late 1800s.
