John Jackson, center, of the Union Pacific Railroad hazardous materials department, bends down Friday to demonstrate how a valve works on top of a rail tank car as area firefighters look on in Villa Grove. From left, Anthony Bennett of the Villa Grove Fire Department; Mike Heise of the Charleston Fire Department; and Kyle Brewer, Charlie Mitsdarfer and Chuck Black, all of Villa Grove, take advantage of training offered by the Union Pacific, Dow Chemical Safety Train.

VILLA GROVE – Chuck Black listened intently as an instructor showed him how to open a valve at the top of a chemical-filled railroad car.

"I'm learning a lot about how to stop leaks and how to be aware of my surroundings," he said. "It's important to know the right steps to take in case of a railroad emergency."
