Family learns basement not a good spot when power goes out

Brad Decker uses a garden hoe and a snow shovel to scoop and scrape carpet padding off his basement floor Wednesday at his home on Brett Drive in Champaign. Decker said the sump pump failed after the power went out as he and his family slept in the basement because of the tornado warning Tuesday night.

CHAMPAIGN – The Decker family of Champaign discovered the basement is a bad place to be sleeping when the power goes out.

About 9:30 Tuesday evening, the family heard a tornado warning. Given that they have a 1-year-old son, Brad and Kathy wanted to take the careful approach.
