Six weeks ago, the students in Peter Ojiambo's Swahili class at the University of Illinois knew little of the mainly east African language.
Today, they've moved well beyond simple words like "jambo." They chat with their professor and each other. They've tackled the subjunctive tense.
Short of studying in Kenya, Congo or elsewhere where Swahili is spoken, the summer class is a way for students to immerse themselves in the language.
