City of Champaign streets Superintendent Kyle Schnider places a barricade at Neil and Main streets Monday in Champaign to close Neil to traffic. The street was closed because of the instability of the north wall of the building at 215 N. Neil St., which was damaged in the Nov. 7 Metropolitan Building fire.
CHAMPAIGN – Two southbound lanes of Neil Street in downtown Champaign were closed by the city Monday afternoon – and could remain closed for an extended period – because of concerns that a fire-damaged law-office building could collapse into the street.
The city closed Neil Street near the building, just south of the intersection with Main and Church streets, at 1 p.m. Monday. The sidewalk on the west side of Neil was also closed.
