CHAMPAIGN – A desire to avoid placing a financial burden on property owners during a difficult economy led the city council on Tuesday to reject a proposal to require the screening off of trash containers.
Council members voted 5-4 to reject mandatory screening of trash containers for apartments, commercial and industrial buildings built before 1997. The proposal would have required a 6-foot-high wooden or opaque masonry fence to shield trash containers. City staff estimated that adding such screening would cost building owners an estimated $2,000 to $4,000.
