Diabetes blamed for accident south of Champaign

Fire and rescue personnel carry the victim of a single-car accident to an ambulance in rural Savoy on Friday afternoon. The car, carrying one person, was southbound when it left the road and then rolled over after passing through the yard of a rural farmstead.

SAVOY – Former University of Illinois sports announcer Jim Sheppard sustained minor injuries when his car left a road south of Champaign and rolled over Friday afternoon.

Champaign County sheriff's Capt. Tim Voges said Sheppard, 60, of the 1900 block of Ridge Park Drive, Urbana, was driving south on South First Street extended near County Road 1025N about 12:30 p.m. when his car ran off the east side of the road, traveling about 600 feet through a yard.
