Fire ravages three-story Champaign apartment building

Champaign and Urbana firefighters battle an apartment fire Monday at 53 E. John St., C. The campus apartment building, owned by Barr Real Estate, was evacuated when a fire began on the first floor and spread up to the third floor.
CHAMPAIGN – Bin Jiang and his wife, Tian Zhang, looked stunned Monday afternoon.
Standing in a steady drizzle, Jiang put his arm around Zhang as they watched their home on the University of Illinois campus burn.
The couple had moved into a first-floor apartment at 51-53 E. John St., C, nearly a year ago.
"We've lost all our possessions," Jiang said. "The worst part is that we didn't have any renters insurance."
