Road work planned in C-U
A number of streets in Champaign and Urbana will have traffic affected by street maintenance beginning next week.
— Weather permitting, reconstruction is to begin Monday on the southernmost alley bounded by Fourth Street, Chalmers Street, Third Street and Daniel Street.
The alley will be closed to traffic while deteriorated pavement is removed. The purpose is to upgrade the pavement and improve storm water drainage.
Residents and businesses will be notified which driveways and parking lots will need to be closed. Depending on weather, the project should take two to three weeks. The contractor for the project is A and R Services.
— Also Monday, Peabody Drive from First Street to the Activities and Recreation Center will have its eastbound lane closed to through traffic while a new steam service is installed for the Ikenberry Residence Halls. The single lane will be closed through June 26.
Then, beginning on June 27, both lanes will be closed. The street is expected to reopen July 29.
— Traffic at the intersection of Chalmers and Fifth streets in Champaign will be interrupted beginning Monday while a water main is relocated. One lane will be open while the work is done. It should be finished June 22.
— Starting Wednesday Curtis Meadow Drive from Foxborough Court to Brighton Court in Champaign will be reconstructed. A and R Services will begin work on the eastbound lane at Curtis Meadow Drive from Foxborough Court to Brighton Court.
Only westbound one-way traffic will be allowed. Curtis Meadow Drive will remain open only to local and emergency traffic.
— In Urbana, the intersection of Division and Kerr avenues and the portion of Division Avenue 250 feet south of the intersection will be closed to all through traffic beginning at 7 a.m. Tuesday while the city installs a new sanitary sewer.
All residents along Division and Kerr will be able to access their properties during the sewer installation. The streets are scheduled to reopen by 5 p.m. June 22, weather permitting.
— North Maple Street from East Main Street to East University Avenue will be closed between Tuesday and Friday for ditch grading. Businesses along North Maple will have access via either East Main Street on the south end or via University Avenue from the north end.
