Danville businesses to sponsor food distribution

DANVILLE — A truckload of food will be distributed to hungry families Saturday at Courtesy Ford in Danville.

The dealership at 231 W. Main St. is teaming up with Enterprise Rent-A-Car to sponsor a foodmobile from the Eastern Illinois Foodbank.

The distribution will begin at 9 a.m. and last about two hours. It's open to all Vermilion County residents who have a monthly household income at or below 150 percent of the poverty level — up to $1,362 for a single person, $1,839 for a family of two, $2,316 for a family of three and $2,795 for a family of four, for example.

Employee volunteers from Courtesy Ford and Enterprise, along with University of Illinois students and other food bank volunteers, will give out two to three days' worth of groceries to an estimated 100 families.

The food bank's mobile food pantries are designed to bring nutritious food to areas of chronic or extreme need. Local companies are invited to sponsor a one-day distribution of food, which costs $2,000.

Data released this year by Feeding America, the nation's network of food banks, shows 18 percent of people in Vermilion County are considered "food insecure," sometimes lacking adequate access to food. About 29 percent of children are food insecure, according to the Map the Meal Gap study.

Those figures have been on the rise for a decade, according to Cheryl Precious, director of marketing and development at the Eastern Illinois Foodbank.

"Danville has been hit especially hard," she said in a release, adding that the food bank is grateful for the support from Enterprise and Courtesy. Kim Shuller, area manager for Enterprise, said the two businesses are committed to helping struggling families in the community.

Other foodmobile distributions can be found on the food bank's website at http://www.eifoodbank.org (under "find help").
