Former state lawmaker says balancing budget will not be easy

A former area lawmaker said there are ways that the Illinois General Assembly can do a better job of making decisions when putting together a state budget.

The comments come from Rick Winkel, who's the Director of the Office of Public Leadership at the University of Illinois' Institute of Government and Public Affairs. Winkel was also a member of the state legislature from 1995 to 2007.

Illinois lawmakers have a little more than three weeks left to get a budget passed by both the House of Representatives and the Senate.

Winkel said balancing the state budget will not be easy.

Winkel added that giving lawmakers more time to review budget proposals and ideas instead of doing that right before voting on the budget will be a big help as well.

He made the comments Thursday on the WDWS Morning Show.

The Illinois General Assembly has until midnight on May 31 to put together a budget for the fiscal year that begins on July 1.
