Union upset by call for cuts to front-line staff
SPRINGFIELD – Although the governor's proposed budget would add more prison jobs, the corrections officers' union and some Republican lawmakers say it actually worsens the system's staffing problems.
"The budget for the Department of Corrections proposes creating 140 new middle managers and paying for it by laying off 203 front-line staff positions," said Buddy Maupin, regional director for the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees Council 31. "We have a terrible staffing shortage in front-line staff in the Department of Corrections, and the idea that the solution to that is to get rid of so many front-line staff and create so many more middle managers is foolish."
