Workshop on starting tech business set Feb. 26

CHAMPAIGN – A workshop about what it takes to start a technology-related business is scheduled Feb. 26 at the University of Illinois.

The "Invention to Venture" workshop will run from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. in the auditorium of the Coordinated Science Laboratory, 1308 W. Main St., U.

The workshop is intended primarily for college and university students, but it's also open to anyone wanting to know more about what it takes to commercialize a technology.

Presentations focus on venture capital, marketing, intellectual property and business plans.

Speakers include: Brian Frizzell of the Charles River Association, Emily Wee of the UI's Office of Technology Management, Brady Allison of Busey Bank, Dave Kellner of ANDalyze Inc., Alan Singleton of Singleton Law Firm, Tim Hoerr of Serra Ventures, Jed Taylor of Pattern Insight, Rob Schultz of IllinoisVentures and Ken Welch of Virtual Sales Dept.

The cost is $15 for students, $40 for faculty members and staff, $60 for alumni and $75 for members of the business community. The fee includes a participant guide, lunch and a continental breakfast.

The workshop is hosted by the UI's Technology Entrepreneur Center in cooperation with the Massachusetts-based National Collegiate Inventors and Innovators Alliance.
