Forecast warns of potential holiday travel problems

The National Weather Service continues to predict that much of Illinois will be hit by a Christmas Eve snowstorm, but says it is not certain what areas will be hardest hit or how much snow will fall.

Still, those with holiday travel plans are being warned that they may be disrupted.

The storm is expected to move into Illinois Thursday night and Friday, the weather service said. Snow is expected to develop late Thursday and Thursday night with the bulk of it during the day on Friday. Snow is expected to leave the area on Friday, with some flurries on Christmas Day.

The most recent forecasts, issued Wednesday morning, says "it appears that areas west of I-55 will see 3 to 4 inches of snow," while the area between I-55 and I-57 is likely to get 2 to 3 inches and an inch or two is expected along the Indiana border.

The weather service said the storm's path and intensity could change from what's now forecast, and that those planning holiday travel should closely monitor forecasts and be prepared to adjust travel plans.
