New production of 'Camelot' coming to Assembly Hall
The Knights of the Round Table are coming to the University of Illinois later this month.
Lerner & Loewe's "Camelot," part of the WCIA 3 Broadway Series, is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Oct. 29 at the Assembly Hall Star Theatre.
From the team of Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe, who created "My Fair Lady," comes this musical adaptation of T.H. White's "The Once and Future King."
"Camelot" first premiered on Broadway in 1960 at the Majestic Theater. The production ran 873 performances, winning four Tony Awards. The 1967 film version won three Academy Awards. The original cast album was America's top-selling LP for 60 weeks.
This new production of "Camelot" premiered July 8 this year in Grand Bend, Ontario. It's directed and choreographed by Timothy French and features Mark Harapiak and Jayme Armstrong in the lead roles of King Arthur and Queen Guenevere, with Gabriel Burrafato as Sir Lancelot.
The plot features a love triangle among beautiful Queen Guenevere, gentle King Arthur and dashing knight Lancelot.
King Arthur must decide whether to sacrifice his true love or his honor.
"Magicians, sorcerers and noblemen run rampant, only to collide in a flurry of fanfare as Lerner and Loewe spin an unforgettable web of spellbinding action and forbidden love," according to a press release from Jennifer Larson, the assistant director of marketing at the Assembly Hall.
It features songs like "The Simple Joys of Maidenhood," "Camelot," "The Lusty Month of May" and "If Ever I Would Leave You."
Tickets range from $35 to $48, with a $10 discount for University of Illinois students and a $2 discount for groups of 10 or more. To order group tickets, call 217-333-5404.
