University Y awards $100,000 in scholarship
The University YMCA on Monday awarded more than $100,000 in Fred S. Bailey Scholarships to University of Illinois students who have demonstrated leadership and involvement in their community.
Thirty-four students were selected from over 150 applications to receive scholarships. Twenty-six freshman, sophomores, and juniors will each receive a scholarship of $3,000 in recognition their work in addressing real problems facing the world in the areas of social justice, the environment, faith, and the international community.
This year also marks the first year of the Bailey Leadership Awards with four $5,000 scholarships given out to seniors who have shown exceptional leadership in one of the following categories: Environmental, Faith in Action, International and Faith in Justice.
As president of Champaign National Bank, Fred S. Bailey worked with the YMCA. When he died in 1955, his eill established the Fred Bailey Trust and designated two-thirds of the income to be paid to the University YMCA for scholarships to UI students on the basis of "moral character, intelligence, leadership and scholarship without regard to their field of study."
Since 2001, more than 500 students have received $1.1 million in Bailey Scholarships.
